latest DVDs

A list of DVDs bought in 2013 was posted recently; this is just an update.

Black Sun is a very moving and uplifting, award-winning documentary about Hugues de Montalembert, an artist and film-maker based in New York, who becomes blind as a result of an attack in which paint stripper was thrown in his face.

This reviewer is far more eloquent that I am:
"Defying expectation, the remarkable artist continued to travel the world alone, learning to navigate life in a new and beautiful way. Through striking imagery and philosophical narration, director and composer Gary Tarn creates an expressionist, poetic meditation on an extraordinary life without vision, and the idea of perception in general in Black Sun."

This movie has been described as "strong story—a fiction about a young doctor and an African dictator" - Kim Masters: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/hollywoodland/2007/01/based_on_true_events.html

By the way, is anyone up-to-date with the fate of the Campbell family, whose experiences are detailed in the documentary Mugabe and the White African?  This is a disturbing account of racial discrimination and persecution under the Mugabe Regime and of incredible courage of the family, determined to fight for the right to stay on the farm purchased after Independence, not only for their own sake but for all white farmers dispossessed on racial grounds.  In spite of an international court verdict in their favour against Mugabe, the persecution continued and eventually their farm was burned to the ground in 2009.

The product review for Wild China reads as follows:
With splendour, scale and romance, Wild China lifts the veil on the world's most enigmatic and magnificent country, delving into its vibrant habitats to reveal a land of unbelievable natural complexity. Journey across China from the glittering peaks of the Himalayas to the barren steppe, the sub-Arctic to the tropical islands, through deserts both searingly hot and mind-numbingly cold and see, in pioneering images, a dazzling array of mysterious, beautiful, wild and rare creatures.
